On September 5, 2023, Professor Webiston Jokonya announced the establishment of the United Republic of Delvin (URD), transforming the once uninhabited Howland Island into a sovereign state. Professor Jokonya assumed the role of the
nation’s first Prime Minister.
Geography and Infrastructure
Situated in the Central Pacific Ocean, approximately 1,700 nautical miles southwest of Honolulu, URD covers an area of 160 hectares. The capital, Nashville City (NC), and two smaller towns, Howland Town and Webston Town, serve as focal points of habitation. Noteworthy infrastructure includes Port Howland and Port Denzel, as well as the Nashville International Airport (NIA).
Governance and Leadership
Leading URD is Professor Webiston Jokonya, its founder and Prime Minister. Other key figures in the nation’s leadership include Prof. Dr. Rejaul Abedin PhD DBA FCMAN FGEPEA, the Minister of Education, and Prof Dr. Charles C.O., the Attorney General.
Resource and Economic Landscape
With an equatorial climate marked by limited rainfall and abundant sunshine, URD’s resources include guano, a valuable fertilizer derived from wild bats and birds. The challenge lies in water sourcing and conservation due to the absence of freshwater resources.
Vision and Development
Professor Jokonya envisions URD as a progressive nation, focusing on diplomatic relations, attracting investors, and
infrastructural development. The nation actively seeks collaborations and investments to ensure economic growth and sustainability.
Citizenship and Future Prospects
Despite its recent establishment, URD boasts 36 registered citizens, primarily from Asia and Europe. The micro-nation’s growth prospects depend on strategic partnerships, economic initiatives, and visionary leadership.
