Trevor Vusumuzi Ncube was born on September 9, 1962, in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. His formative years in Zimbabwe played a crucial role in shaping his future career trajectory. He attended Mzilikazi High School in Bulawayo and later enrolled at the University of Zimbabwe, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Economic History.

Ncube further honed his leadership skills by completing several prestigious programs at the Said Business School, University of Oxford, including the Advanced Management and Leadership Programme in 2009, the High Performance Leadership Programme in 2012, and the Strategic Leadership Programme in 2017.

Media Career

Trevor Ncube started his professional journey as a teacher before moving into journalism and media. In 1989, he joined The Financial Gazette as an assistant editor and was promoted to executive editor by 1991. His tenure at The Financial Gazette ended in 1995 after a fallout over his critical stance on Robert Mugabe’s authoritarian regime, a turning point that led him to greater independence and influence in the media industry.

Media Ownership

After parting ways with The Financial Gazette, Ncube founded Alpha Media Holdings (AMH), which now owns four major newspapers in Zimbabwe: NewsDay, Southern Eye, The Zimbabwe Independent, and The Standard. He also holds a significant stake and serves as the chairman of Heart & Soul Broadcasting Services (HStv).

From 2002 to 2017, Ncube was the main shareholder of the Mail & Guardian, a leading South African publication, extending his influence across national borders and shaping media discourse in both Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Ncube is also the host and producer of the “In Conversation with Trevor” podcast, available on YouTube, where he interviews distinguished professionals from various fields.

Board Positions

  • 2004-2008: President of Print Media South Africa (PMSA)
  • 2008: Appointed as an independent non-executive director on the board of MoneyWeb, listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange
  • 2013/14: Chairman of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Informed Societies
  • 2013/14: Member of the Hivos International Supervisory Board
  • 2014/15: Member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Africa
  • Chairman of the African Media Initiative (AMI), focusing on improving sector viability and professionalism
  • Fellow of The Aspen Institute and Fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative (ALI)

Personal Life

Trevor Ncube is married to Nyaradzo, and together they have two children: a son named Keith and a daughter named Maya. In his leisure time, he enjoys reading books and engaging in adult coloring activities. Both he and his wife share a love for music and wine.
