During her time in the city of dreams, she had a fateful encounter with Angelica Nwandu, the visionary Nigerian-American founder of The Shade Room (TSR), one of the most influential Instagram platforms globally. TSR is renowned for its viral and often controversial content spanning celebrities, pop culture, politics, and social issues. With over 27 million loyal followers, or “Roommates,” TSR has become a digital powerhouse.
Impressed by Mawema’s creativity and engaging personality, Nwandu wasted no time and offered her a position as an editor for TSR. Thembi quickly ascended the ranks and assumed the role of Director of Social Media. In this capacity, she oversees all the content shared on TSR’s various platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok.
Thembi Mawema also donned the hat of an on-air host for TSR, where she covered major events such as the VMAs, Billboard Awards, Grammy Awards, and BET Awards. She conducted interviews with top-tier celebrities, including Cardi B, Diddy, Saweetie, Nick Cannon, and Queen Latifah. At 29 years old, Thembi Mawema takes immense pride in her Zimbabwean heritage. Fluent in both English and Shona, an official language of Zimbabwe, she passionately advocates for African women’s empowerment in the media industry.
