In July 2014, Ruth found herself amidst controversy when she and nine others received an honorary doctorate from the International Institute of Philanthropy (IIP). Doubts arose regarding the legitimacy of the institution, as it had been registered mere weeks before granting the honorary degrees. Enrico Sibanda, the institution’s chief facilitator, offered vague explanations and emphasized their lack of accountability when questioned about the authenticity of the degrees.
