Rusty Markham Biography: Farmer, Politician, and Activist

Early Life and Education

Rusty Markham, a prominent Zimbabwean farmer and politician, was born on May 19, 1960, in Choma, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). He hails from a lineage of white Zimbabweans, with his great-grandfather having served as an Anglican missionary in the country during the 1890s. Markham’s educational journey took him through John Cowie Primary School in Rusape, Umtali Boys High School in Mutare, and Gwebi Agricultural College.

Career in Agriculture and Agronomy

Markham has carved a niche in the realms of agriculture and agronomy. Since 2004, he has directed a notable company. Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Markham serves as a trustee for several organizations including the Harare Wetlands Trust, the Stratford Road Community Trust, and the Hatcliffe Development Trust. His commitment extends to environmental conservation and community development initiatives.

Political Involvement and Achievements

Markham’s political journey commenced with his affiliation to the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in 2000. His influence grew over the years, culminating in his role as a member of the Harare City Council from 2013 to 2018, representing Ward 18. The 2018 general election saw him elected as the MDC Alliance candidate for the Harare North constituency in the National Assembly, displacing the ZANU–PF incumbent Tongesayi Mudambo. He officially took office on September 5, 2018.

Within Parliament, Markham has championed causes such as anti-corruption measures, human rights protection, agricultural advancement, and efficient service delivery. His activism led to his arrest in January 2019 alongside fellow MDC parliamentarians on charges of inciting violence during protests against fuel price hikes. He was subsequently released on bail. He has consistently raised concerns about alleged government corruption impacting the agricultural sector.

Rivalry with Tendai Biti

A notable rivalry emerged between Markham and Tendai Biti centered around the Harare East constituency. Biti, the incumbent MP for Harare East, accused Markham, former MP for Harare North, of employing questionable tactics and wielding undue influence to sway voters within the new electoral boundaries. Allegations surfaced of derogatory language used by Biti against Markham, who remained silent in response. However, Markham noted that Biti is a personal friend and his legal counsel.

Personal Life and Interests

Markham leads a married life and resides in Harare’s Borrowdale suburb. His leisure pursuits encompass farming, gardening, fishing, and golfing.
