Raj Modi, the distinguished Zimbabwean entrepreneur and politician representing Bulawayo South in the National Assembly, was born on February 4, 1959, in Rajpipla, Gujarat, India. Hailing from a middle-class background, he pursued economics at South Gujarat University before embarking on his journey to Zimbabwe in 1981. Initially employed as a cashier at the Gujarat Electricity Board, Modi’s life took a new trajectory as he ventured into Zimbabwe’s vibrant and diverse landscape.

Modi’s foray into the business realm began with his tenure at a department store in Zimbabwe, eventually culminating in establishing and expanding a supermarket chain. In 2013, he strategically sold his supermarkets, diversifying his interests into liquor wholesale, manufacturing, and mining sectors. Beyond his entrepreneurial pursuits, Modi actively engages in social and charitable initiatives, championing causes related to education, health, and sports within his community.

Raj Modi’s Political Journey

Modi’s political odyssey within ZANU–PF commenced in the early 2000s, marked by his ascent to leadership roles at district, ward, and provincial levels. Notably aligned with President Emmerson Mnangagwa during the factional disputes preceding the 2017 coup d’état, Modi secured his place in history by becoming the sole victorious ZANU–PF candidate in Bulawayo in 2018 – a region traditionally dominated by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.

President Mnangagwa’s appointment of Modi as deputy minister of industry and commerce marked a groundbreaking moment, as he became the first person of Indian origin to hold a cabinet position in Zimbabwe, extending his influence beyond South Africa. Despite a setback in the 2023 general election, Modi’s resilience led to his triumphant return in a by-election in December 2023, subsequently earning him the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce position in January 2024.
