Priscilla Chigumba’s Family

Priscilla Chigumba was once married to Mac Christopher Chigumba Jnr, and their union blessed them with four children, including a daughter named Mukai.

Educational Pursuits

Her educational journey began at Goromonzi High School for O-levels and continued at St Ignatius High School, where she excelled with 15 Advanced Level points in 1989. Priscilla then pursued a Bachelor of Law degree at King’s College London in the United Kingdom.

Career as a High Court Judge

Following her graduation, Priscilla Chigumba commenced her legal career at Gollop and Blank law firm in 1994, practicing as a lawyer for six years. Subsequently, she served as an assistant company secretary at PG Industries before establishing her own law firm. In 2004, she joined the Justice and Legal Affairs Ministry, holding various roles such as resident magistrate, provincial magistrate, and senior professional research assistant in the Office of the Chief Justice. Her elevation to the position of Justice of the High Court occurred on December 20, 2012, during the Government of National Unity era.

Significant Legal Rulings

Suspending the Police Ban on Demonstrations

In 2016, Priscilla Chigumba made headlines by overturning a two-week ban on protests imposed by the police. The High Court judge suspended the ban for seven days, emphasizing the deteriorating security situation.

Allegations of Soliciting a Bribe

Chigumba faced challenging times when accused of soliciting a $20,000 bribe from a party involved in a case she presided over. The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) investigated the matter, responding to a written complaint, and Chigumba provided her explanation.

Mawarire Clearance

In November 2017, Chigumba cleared Evan Mawarire of charges related to attempting to overthrow the government and inciting public violence. She found no evidence to support the allegations, stating Mawarire consistently advocated for peace during his campaigns.

Career as ZEC Chairperson

Assuming the role of ZEC Chairperson on January 31, 2018, succeeding Justice Rita Makarau, Chigumba’s leadership was reconfirmed by President Mnangagwa in January 2024 for another six-year term.

Accusations of Bias and Rigging

In June 2018, Chigumba faced accusations of bias towards Zanu-PF and Emmerson Mnangagwa. However, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission dismissed circulated photos as fake, attributing them to criminal elements attempting to disrupt the election process. In October 2019, journalist Edmund Kudzayi alleged possible rigging in the 2018 election involving Mnangagwa and Chigumba.

Awards and Recognition

Priscilla Chigumba’s contributions were acknowledged in 2011 when she received the Women Human Rights Defender Award from the Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association, joining the ranks of other esteemed recipients.
