This is the biography of Norman Takanyariwa Mapeza, a renowned Zimbabwean football manager and former player.

Early Life

Norman Takanyariwa Mapeza, the esteemed football manager and former player from Zimbabwe, was born on April 12, 1972, in Honde Valley. At the age of five, Mapeza relocated to Harare, where he was raised by a stepmother following the passing of his biological mother in 1986. Tragically, his father, Michael Mapeza, succumbed to illness on January 7, 2020, in a private hospital in Harare, with symptoms resembling Covid-19.

Football Career

Mapeza’s illustrious career as a footballer was marked by his versatility, excelling as both a defender and midfielder. He commenced his club journey with Darryn Textiles F.C. in Harare before venturing to Europe to play for Sokół Pniewy in the Polish Ekstraklasa during the 1993–94 season. Noteworthy stints followed in the Turkish Super Lig with esteemed clubs such as Galatasaray S.K., Ankaragücü, Altay S.K., and Malatyaspor.

His achievements include being the second Zimbabwean player to grace the UEFA Champions League, representing Galatasaray in 1990. After his European exploits, Mapeza returned to Africa, showcasing his talents with CAPS United in Zimbabwe and Ajax Cape Town in South Africa, where he also took on responsibilities as a playing assistant coach.

Coaching Career

Transitioning from player to manager, Mapeza assumed the managerial role at Monomotapa United in July 2007, albeit briefly, resigning in 2008. However, his managerial acumen was evident, leading to his appointment as the caretaker manager of Zimbabwe’s national football team, the Warriors. Despite facing challenges, including a suspension in February 2012 due to match-fixing allegations, Mapeza’s journey continued with successes at F.C. Platinum and a stint with Chippa United in the Premier Soccer League.

His enduring bond with F.C. Platinum led to his return in Zimbabwe, alongside intermittent spells as the caretaker manager of the Warriors. In 2024, he once again assumed the role of interim coach for the Warriors.

Personal Life

Norman Mapeza maintains a private personal life, although it is known that he is married and has a family. During a public event, he introduced his wife and son, offering a glimpse into his personal sphere.
