Early Life and Education

Nelson Chamisa is a prominent Zimbabwean politician, lawyer, pastor, and activist, born on February 2, 1978, in Fort Victoria, Rhodesia (now Masvingo, Zimbabwe). He grew up in Gutu, Masvingo, attending Alheit High School, where his athletic prowess earned him the nickname “Mhepo,” meaning “Wind.”

Chamisa later moved to Harare for further studies at Harare Polytechnic and the University of Zimbabwe. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and public administration, followed by a Bachelor of Laws degree and a Master of Laws degree in international trade and investment law from the same institution. He also holds a Pentecostal theology degree from Living Waters Theological Seminary of Harare and serves as a pastor in the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe.

Chamisa’s political journey began as a student leader at the University of Zimbabwe, where he was the secretary-general of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), advocating for academic freedom and social justice. He joined the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in 1999, opposing the ruling ZANU-PF party led by Robert Mugabe.

In 2003, Chamisa became the youngest member of parliament at 25, winning the Kuwadzana seat after a by-election. He was elected chairperson of the MDC Youth Assembly and later became the spokesperson of the MDC-Tsvangirai faction. Chamisa’s involvement was instrumental in Morgan Tsvangirai’s presidential campaign in 2008, where he secured more votes than Mugabe in the first round but a runoff was canceled due to violence.

After negotiations, a Government of National Unity (GNU) was established in 2008, with Chamisa appointed as Minister of Information Communication Technology, becoming the youngest cabinet minister at 31. He served until 2013 when the GNU ended after another disputed election.

Chamisa played a significant role in the MDC-T, including being elected as the organizing secretary and later one of Tsvangirai’s three deputies.

Post-2013 Election

In 2014, a split occurred within the MDC-T when Tsvangirai refused to step down as party leader after the 2013 election defeat. Chamisa remained loyal and was appointed one of Tsvangirai’s deputies in 2016.

In 2018, Tsvangirai’s death led to a leadership dispute, with Chamisa and Thokozani Khupe both claiming the MDC-T presidency.

Nelson Chamisa In The 2018 Elections

Chamisa became the MDC Alliance (MDC-A) leader in 2018, a coalition challenging ZANU-PF in the elections. He faced off against Emmerson Mnangagwa and despite allegations of irregularities, Mnangagwa won narrowly.

2020 MDC-T Court Ruling And CCC Formation

In 2020, the Supreme Court ruled Chamisa’s MDC-T leadership illegal, leading to a fresh congress. In 2022, he founded the Citizens Coalition for Change, focusing on economic revival, human rights, and defeating ZANU-PF in the 2023 elections.

Nelson Chamisa Personal Life

Chamisa is married to Sithokozile Chamisa, and they have a son, Ashley Chamisa. He’s a devout Christian who often references scriptures in his speeches and enjoys reading books on politics, history, law, and theology.
