Age and Personal Life

Mthuli Ncube, currently serving as Zimbabwe’s Finance Minister, was born on November 30, 1964. He is a devoted family man, married, and a proud father of four children.

Education and Academic Achievements

Ncube’s educational journey started at Fatima Primary School and continued at Inyathi Secondary School. He furthered his studies at Fletcher High School in Gweru, specializing in Mathematics, Physics, and Biology for his A levels.

His pursuit of knowledge led him to the University of Zimbabwe, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Economics between 1983 and 1985. In 1987, he attained an M-Phil in Economics from the prestigious University of Cambridge.

Academic and Professional Career

Before his prominent role as Zimbabwe’s Finance Minister, Mthuli Ncube held several distinguished positions. He served as a finance lecturer at the esteemed London School of Economics and later became the dean of the faculty of Commerce, Law, and Management at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits).

He has authored numerous acclaimed papers and books, including titles like “Mathematical Finance: Option and Asset Pricing,” “Financial Systems and Monetary Policy in Africa,” and “Monetary Policy and the Economy in South Africa,” co-authored with Eliphas Ndou.

Role at the African Development Bank

Notably, Ncube assumed the role of Chief Economist and Vice President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), overseeing the Economics Complex. He managed strategic economic research and knowledge management within the bank and its partners.

His responsibilities extended to supervising the Development Research Department, Statistics Department, and African Development Institute. He played a vital role within the senior management team of the bank.

Other Contributions

Beyond his commitments at the AfDB, Mthuli Ncube’s illustrious career includes serving as a regulator and board member of the South African Financial Services Board (FSB). He also held positions as the founding chairman of Barbican and Selwyn Capital, along with various roles at Investec Asset Management.

Finance Minister and Political Involvement

Mthuli Ncube assumed the role of Finance Minister of Zimbabwe on September 7, 2018, under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration. During his tenure, he faced challenges, including the transition from foreign currency to a new Zimbabwean currency, resulting in hyperinflation.

Despite the economic difficulties, Ncube’s policies have garnered both praise and criticism. In the political arena, he has taken steps towards becoming an active member of the ruling party, Zanu PF.
