This is the biography of Michael Reza, a Zimbabwean lawyer who currently serves as the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), having assumed this role in March 2024.


Michael Reza pursued his academic journey in law, earning a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the esteemed University of South Africa. Furthering his legal expertise, he obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Midlands State University. His dedication to combating financial crimes led him to undergo specialized training in money laundering and asset forfeiture across South Africa, Botswana, and Malawi, sponsored by the United Nations Organ on Drugs and Crime.

Career Path

March 19, 2024 marked a significant milestone in Michael Reza’s career when he was appointed as the Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. This appointment came in alignment with constitutional provisions. Before assuming this pivotal role, Reza demonstrated his legal acumen as a prosecutor specializing in grave offenses within Zimbabwe’s judicial system for more than ten years.

Throughout his career, Reza has been instrumental in prosecuting high-profile cases, notably securing the conviction of individuals involved in severe crimes. Notable among these is the successful prosecution of Robert Martin Gumbura for rape. In a more recent case, Reza’s legal expertise was highlighted by the conviction of opposition figure Tendai Biti for verbal assault.

Controversial Incidents

Michael Reza’s career has not been devoid of controversies. One such incident occurred on November 15, 2018, when Reza opted to recuse himself from the trial of Tendai Biti. This decision stemmed from a politically charged filing he submitted at the High Court regarding Biti’s application. Biti contended that his appearance in court followed an unlawful apprehension by Zimbabwean state security agents in Zambia, where he sought asylum.

Another contentious episode unfolded in December 2018, as Biti’s legal representatives moved to hold Reza in contempt of court. Allegations arose concerning a text message purportedly sent by Reza to Thabani Mpofu criticizing the presiding magistrate for allowing journalists to livestream court proceedings. Magistrate Gloria Takundwa subsequently referred this matter to the High Court for deliberation.
