Personal Life
Coming from a family of seven children, Michael Mahendere was the fourth among his siblings. Raised in a devout Christian household, he credits his parents for instilling strong Christian values in him.
Marriage
In December 2011, Mahendere entered into matrimony with Vimbai Nyatsambo. Vimbai not only stands as his life partner but also co-manages his band, Direct Worship. The couple is blessed with three children.
Musical Career
Michael Mahendere’s journey into music began at the tender age of seven when he, along with his brothers Akim, Misheck, and Amos, formed the Mahendere Brothers group. Their debut album, “Mwari Mukuru,” released in 1994, rapidly climbed the charts in Southern Africa.
Driven by a relentless desire to hone his musical talents, Mahendere learned to play instruments, starting with the acoustic guitar his father provided. Over time, he expanded his skills to include the keyboard and drums.
Despite limited resources, he persevered and collaborated with his brothers on various projects, including “Rumbidzo” and “Mapisarema 23.” He even engaged in commercial ventures like the “Go Warriors, Go” campaign for the Zimbabwe Soccer Team.
His collaborations extended to renowned musicians such as the Ruvhuvhuto Sisters and the popular group Pax Afro. Notably, he became the Music Director at the University of Zimbabwe and initiated a Chinese Choral group affiliated with the Confucius Institute.
2011 Mahendere’s prominence soared when he led the UFI Choir in rearranging the song “Makanaka Jesu.” The song’s massive success, with over 1.8 million views on YouTube, solidified his position in the industry.
Getting Personal With God
Michael Mahendere is widely celebrated for his acclaimed album series, “Getting Personal with God.” His solo debut, “Getting Personal with God 1,” was released in 2012 in collaboration with his band, Direct Worship. The album featured 15 tracks, including hits like “We Are Soldiers,” “Love Song,” and “Holy Forever.”
Following this, “Getting Personal with God 2” was released in 2013, with the popular track “Mumoyo.” The success of the album led to a live DVD recording at the New Life Temple in Eastlea, Harare.
In 2017, Mahendere continued his musical journey with “Getting Personal with God III,” which included standout songs like “Salt of the Earth” and the collaboration “Chiiko” with Loyiso Bala.
His commitment to the series culminated in the 2021 release of “Getting Personal with God: Mercy,” featuring impactful songs such as “Zvaringana,” “Kudza Jehovah,” “Tangai Neni,” and “Nyasha Dzaishe.”
Emmanuel Makandiwa
Michael and Vimbai Mahendere are devoted followers of charismatic preachers, Emmanuel and Ruth Makandiwa, United Family International Church leaders. Within this ministry, Michael Mahendere serves as a senior pastor and attributes his success to Makandiwa’s spiritual guidance.
