Early Life and Education

Gift Ostallos Siziba, a prominent Zimbabwean political activist and former student leader, currently holds the position of National Deputy Spokesperson at the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC).

Born in Zimbabwe, Siziba’s passion for politics and activism was ignited during his formative years, influenced by his father’s involvement in the opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), as well as his trade union activities.

He pursued higher education at the University of Zimbabwe, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master’s degree in International Relations. While at the university, Siziba actively engaged with the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), eventually becoming the Student Representative Council (SRC) President in 2015. He led various student protests against issues such as tuition fee hikes, inadequate living conditions, and limitations on academic freedom.

Political Career and Activism

After graduation, Siziba made significant contributions to Zimbabwe’s political landscape. He joined the Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (RTUZ) as the public relations officer in 2016. Also, he assumed the role of secretary-general for the MDC Youth Assembly, the youth wing of the country’s primary opposition party.

Siziba played a pivotal role in orchestrating protests and campaigns advocating for electoral reforms, constitutional amendments, and government accountability. He was instrumental in the establishment of the #Tajamuka/Sesjikile Campaign in 2016, which aimed to unite citizens in peaceful demonstrations against the ruling party and its leader at the time, Robert Mugabe. The campaign effectively organized mass actions utilising social media platforms, including strikes, marches, petitions, and boycotts. It fostered collaborations with civil society organizations, trade unions, churches, and opposition parties to strengthen the collective opposition.

In 2022, with the formation of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Siziba assumed the role of National Deputy Spokesperson for the party.

Challenges and Controversies

Siziba’s unwavering dedication to activism has exposed him to numerous challenges and controversies. He has been subjected to arrests, detainment, torture, and abduction by state security forces and the police on multiple occasions.

Notable incidents include his abduction during an electoral reform march in 2016, where he was severely beaten and imprisoned. In 2019, he was detained on charges of incitement to commit public violence following remarks he allegedly made at a rally. Additionally, he faced disqualification as a parliamentary candidate in 2023 due to technical glitches in the submission of his nomination papers.

Achievements and Recognition

Amidst the adversity, Siziba has garnered recognition for his impactful contributions:

  • He received the Student Activist of the Year award from ZINASU in 2015, acknowledging his role in defending students’ rights.
  • Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) nominated him for the Outstanding Youth Activist award in 2016, recognizing his involvement in the #Tajamuka/Sesjikile Campaign and RTUZ.
  • The Africa Youth Awards featured him in the 100 Most Influential Young Africans list in 2017, highlighting his efforts towards social change and democracy.
  • Siziba was invited to speak at prestigious events like the Oslo Freedom Forum, World Economic Forum, Africa Leadership Academy, and Harvard Kennedy School.
