This is the biography of George Guvamatanga, a banker and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Investment Promotion in Zimbabwe.

Early Life

George Tongesayi Guvamatanga, born in 1971, spent his formative years in Harare’s Kambuzuma suburb. His educational journey commenced at Kurai Primary School, followed by Kambuzuma 1 High School for secondary education.

In 1995, he earned a diploma from the Institute of Bankers of Zimbabwe, paving the way for his future endeavours. Subsequently, he enriched his knowledge through an Executive Development Programme at the University of Chicago and acquired a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of London in 2010.

Banking Career

George’s professional voyage embarked during the late 80s when he embraced an apprenticeship opportunity in science at Olivine. Despite his initial inclination towards accounting, fate steered him towards a banking career. His journey unfolded with an interview at Barclays Bank, marking the inception of his remarkable trajectory.

In 2008, he ascended to the position of managing director and executive director of Barclays Bank of Zimbabwe Ltd., catalyzing significant advancements within the institution. Additionally, he assumed leadership as the president of the Bankers Association of Zimbabwe.

Permanent Secretary Role

In September 2018, George’s professional narrative took a new turn when he received an unexpected call. Little did he know, this conversation would culminate in his appointment as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development. The sudden offer caught him by surprise, signalling the commencement of a pivotal chapter in his career.

Business Interests

Beyond his banking exploits, Guvamatanga diversified his portfolio, delving into real estate, insurance, retail, distribution, and farming ventures. His entrepreneurial acumen laid the groundwork for ventures that thrived even before his foray into governmental roles.

On November 25, 2021, he assumed a non-executive directorship position on the board of the Eastern and Southern African Trade and Development Bank Group (TDB Group), further amplifying his influence in the economic landscape.

Personal Life

George Guvamatanga, a devoted family man, shares his life with his wife and six children. In August 2020, amidst a challenging battle with COVID-19, he commemorated his recovery by treating his family to a memorable trip to Victoria Falls via a private aircraft.

Furthermore, his penchant for celebrations was evident when he hosted South Africa’s renowned artists, Makhadzi and Mafikizolo, at his private 50th birthday extravaganza. Additionally, his daughter’s wedding in Cape Town showcased the family’s penchant for grandeur.
