This is the biography of Frya, a Zimbabwe-born and South Africa-based singer and songwriter who has gained prominence for doing popular South African series soundtracks. Frya has captured the hearts of many with her soulful voice and powerful performances

Early Life and Education

Frya, whose real name is Rutendo Maregere, was born into a musically inclined family in Zimbabwe. Her upbringing was steeped in melodies and harmonies, laying the foundation for her future career in music. In 2016, she moved to South Africa to further her education, pursuing studies that balanced her interests in finance and music.

Frya Enters The Music Industry

Frya’s entry into the music scene was serendipitous. She posted a cover of Adele’s “One And Only” on Instagram, which went viral. This caught the attention of a producer from SABC 1, leading to her first professional project where she wrote and recorded the title track for the show “Side Dish.” This marked her official debut in the music industry.

In 2019, Frya featured on the “Kure Remix” by Ishan, and by 2020, she made the bold decision to leave her corporate job to focus on her music career full-time. This move opened numerous opportunities and allowed her to fully immerse herself in her passion.

Frya On Blood And Water

Frya’s significant breakthrough came with her work on the soundtrack for the popular Netflix series “Blood And Water.” This project not only highlighted her musical talent but also introduced her to a global audience. She subsequently worked on soundtracks for other prominent shows like “The River,” “Lockdown,” “Jive,” “The Kingdom,” and Nigeria’s “Glamorous Girls.”

Her music, described as a blend of Afrobeats, R&B, Soul, and Reggae/Dancehall, embodies the spirit of the modern African woman. Her debut album, “Balance,” is a showcase of her songwriting prowess and emotional depth, featuring diverse sounds that explore the intricacies of relationships. Collaborating with producers like Mr Kamera, GT Beats, and Andre Harris, Frya’s album reflects her versatility and ability to convey a wide range of emotions.

Frya’s popularity in Zimbabwe soared following her collaboration with reggae-dancehall icon Winky D on the song “Akayenda.” Released in 2024 as part of Winky D’s “Love Quartet” compilation, the track became an instant hit. Produced by Oskid Productions and featuring the mesmerizing guitar work of Trust Samende, “Akayenda” showcased Frya’s vocal abilities alongside Winky D’s distinctive style.
