Felix Tangawarima is a renowned retired referee from Zimbabwe, currently serving as a senior referees’ instructor for the Confederation of African Football (CAF). His journey through the world of football officiating has been marked by significant milestones and accolades.

Age

Felix Tangawarima was born in 1958, marking the beginning of a life that would become deeply intertwined with football.

Career as a Referee

Felix Tangawarima began his illustrious career in refereeing at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), held in Ghana and Nigeria. Known for his unwavering and decisive officiating style, he quickly garnered respect on the field.

One of his standout moments came during the 2000 AFCON when he made the bold decision to send off Nigeria’s star player, Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha, in a crucial quarter-final match against Senegal. Despite facing a hostile home crowd, Tangawarima remained firm, ejecting Okocha for elbowing an opponent, which was the only red card Okocha received in his international career.

Tangawarima’s performance at the AFCON led to his selection for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where he officiated the match between Spain and Chile, further establishing his reputation on the international stage.

In 1988, Tangawarima was inducted into the FIFA refereeing panel, representing Zimbabwe. He continued to officiate at various levels until his retirement in 2003. His expertise did not go to waste; in 2004, he transitioned to a role as a CAF instructor, and by 2008, he was working with FIFA to develop and mentor referees across Africa.

Honours and Recognition

Felix Tangawarima’s contributions to football have been widely recognized. He was appointed as the referees’ manager for the Southern African football governing body, COSAFA, a testament to his influence and dedication to the sport.
