Age and Early Life

Fadzayi Mahere, a prominent figure in Zimbabwean politics, was born on 30 July 1985 in Harare. Growing up in the suburbs of the city, she was raised in a nurturing environment during the post-independence era of Zimbabwe. Her parents, a nurse and a teacher, provided her with a comfortable middle-class upbringing, allowing her to attend reputable schools and reside in secure neighbourhoods.

Being the second of four siblings and the eldest daughter, Mahere quickly recognized the uneven distribution of household responsibilities based on gender. This realization fueled her passion for human rights and the rule of law from an early age. By the time she was 14, she had already set her sights on becoming a lawyer.

Education and Career

Mahere pursued her higher education at the University of Zimbabwe, earning a Bachelor of Law Honours degree in 2008. She furthered her academic journey by obtaining a Master of Laws degree in International Criminal Law and international Commercial Litigation from the University of Cambridge in 2011.

Upon her return to Zimbabwe in 2011, Mahere established her own legal practice. Her legal acumen and commitment to justice led her to participate in various significant endeavours, including a public inquiry on the introduction of bond notes in Zimbabwe. In 2016, she also became associated with the #thisflagmovement, harnessing the power of social media to rally citizens against the government.

Political Involvement

In 2017, Mahere embarked on her political journey by announcing her candidacy as an independent candidate for the Harare suburb of Mount Pleasant in the 2018 elections. Her dedication to her community led her to organize a soccer tournament, resulting in her arrest under the Public Order and Security Act (POSA).

Joining the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in 2019, Mahere assumed the role of Secretary for Education. Her commitment to transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption efforts culminated in her appointment as the National Spokesperson for the MDC Alliance coalition in May 2020.

Challenges and Advocacy

Mahere’s advocacy for justice and truth has not been without its challenges. In January 2021, she was arrested due to a Tweet in which she allegedly spread false information regarding a junior police officer’s involvement in the death of an infant. This incident further highlighted her unwavering determination to speak out against injustices.

Love Life and Personal Privacy

While Mahere remains tight-lipped about her personal relationships, her romantic life has sparked public curiosity. Past rumors linked her to an individual named Tinashe Murapata, causing Mahere to demand a retraction of the article or face legal action. Despite the speculation, details about her current dating life remain undisclosed.

Continued Activism

As the National Spokesperson for the Citizens Coalition for Change, Mahere continues to be an influential voice advocating for accountability, human rights, and good governance in Zimbabwe. Her journey from a passionate young advocate to a prominent politician is a testament to her commitment to positively impacting her country.
