Career Journey

From Hoops to Goals

Before making a mark in football, Mapfumo showcased his athletic prowess on the basketball court, representing Zimbabwe’s national team while donning the colours of Mabvuku Eastern Lakers.

Kicking Into Prominence

Transitioning from dribbling basketballs to dribbling footballs, Mapfumo honed his skills at the renowned Legends Football Academy in his homeland, Zimbabwe.

His journey to football stardom took an unconventional route, bypassing Zimbabwe’s Premier Soccer League to land directly in the limelight of South Africa’s DStv Premier League. In 2020, he seized the opportunity with Cape Umoya United, later moving to Cape Town City in 2021. Despite facing challenges with playing time, his perseverance led him to Cape Town All-Stars before eventually finding a home with Black Leopards in 2022. Currently, he’s a crucial asset to Polokwane City, where his knack for scoring goals electrifies the field.

Unfortunately, a setback struck in 2023 when a knee injury sidelined him from debuting for Zimbabwe’s senior national football team.

National Allegiance

In April 2023, reports surfaced suggesting a potential switch of national allegiance for Mapfumo. Representatives from the South African Football Association expressed interest in facilitating his eligibility for the South African senior national team.

In response, Victor Mapfumo, Douglas’s father, acknowledged the discussions. While the prospect of playing for Bafana Bafana arose, Douglas remains steadfast in his desire to represent his homeland, the Warriors of Zimbabwe, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his roots.
