Daniel Mazhindu, known as Decibel, is a renowned reggae dancehall artist who gained immense popularity in Zimbabwe for leading the Urban Grooves music movement. He was crowned the King of Zimbabwe Urban Grooves due to his influential contributions to the genre

He earned the title of Zimbabwe Urban Grooves’ King, owing to his impactful contributions to the genre. Decibel’s music deeply connected with listeners, and his first single, ‘Nakai,’ quickly claimed the number one spot on the charts within a mere two weeks of its launch.

Personal Life

Decibel, a native of Shurugwi, Zimbabwe, was born and raised in Masvingo. He is happily married to Charity and has two children, with their firstborn, Kylie Ashanti, born in 2009.

Education

In 2002, Decibel graduated from the University of Zimbabwe with a degree in biochemistry. Alongside his academic pursuits, he pursued a passion for sound engineering, completing his studies in that field in 2011.

Music Career

Decibel embarked on his musical journey back in high school, where he captivated audiences and earned recognition through numerous performances in various talent showcases. He even managed to secure a few accolades during this time.

Nonetheless, his true plunge into the world of music occurred in the year 2000 while attending university. He started as a session musician and backing vocalist for a reggae group hailing from Bulawayo known as Motsi Uruka.

After completing his academic pursuits in 2002, Decibel harbored no doubts about pursuing a serious music career. His exceptional talent was undeniable, leaving no need for persuasion. Fortunately, his talents didn’t go unnoticed, catching the attention of Galaxy Records, a prominent recording label headed by the legendary Delani Makhalima at that period.

Impressed by Decibel’s potential, Galaxy Records promptly signed him to their roster.

Decibel’s journey at Galaxy Records commenced with the production of his debut album, ‘Nakai,’ recorded at their esteemed studio. This track exuded an infectious energy that deeply resonated with audiences, propelling it swiftly up the music charts.

Within just two weeks of its release, ‘Nakai’ soared to the coveted Number 1 position, solidifying Decibel’s status as an emerging star.

Building on the triumph of his debut single, ‘Nakai,’ Decibel continued to make a significant impact in the music industry. He unveiled another chart-topping single, ‘Chido,’ which not only matched but even surpassed the popularity of ‘Nakai’ over time.

Both of these songs secured impressive positions on the year-end charts, with ‘Chido’ claiming the Number 2 spot and ‘Nakai’ at Number 5 on the prestigious Top 100 list.

The music video for ‘Chido’ further solidified Decibel’s success, dominating the charts and holding the Number 1 position for over six consecutive weeks.

As of today, the video has garnered over 106,008 views on YouTube, attesting to the massive appeal of Decibel’s music.

In addition to his local triumphs, Decibel expanded his reach on a global scale with the 2006 release of ‘Ndikati Hello’ in the UK, a collaborative effort with Bkay and Kazz. This endeavor allowed him to connect with a broader audience and establish a prominent international presence, further affirming his standing as a gifted and versatile musician.

Controversies

In 2007, Decibel faced controversy when his song ‘Madhara’ was banned from ZBC channels due to its controversial lyrical content. The ban extended to other artists as well. Despite this, Decibel continued to make an impact in the music industry.
